My experience volunteering at Wythenshawe Food Bank

Back on Track recently ran a project that explored the benefits of volunteering and helped people find local opportunities. We’re delighted that one of the participants, Patrick, has gone on to volunteer at Wythenshawe Food Bank – such important work at a time when so many people are struggling with the cost of living. He told us all about his experiences there.

Could you tell us about your role at the food bank?
Part of my role is to go to local supermarkets and pick up any food they want to donate.  We take it back to the warehouse and sort it all by checking the sell by dates and labelling them. We fill bags with food and give it to local people who need it, like domestic violence charities. I start at 9am and finish around 1pm, last week I was helping to stock take with our manager.

How did you get to know about the role?
I did the volunteering course with Hollie at Back on Track, and I found the opportunity online.  I emailed them and they asked me my availability, and then I turned up for my first shift, where I was shown around and introduced to other staff and volunteers.

What made you want to volunteer?
It helps to show the job centre I am using my time well, and it gets me out of the house and occupies my mind, besides what I do at Back on Track. It’s really easy for me to get to, and everyone is really friendly.  I like to help other people, especially those who don’t have enough money for food like families who are in poverty because everything is going up.

What are the benefits of volunteering?
It helps you meet new people, and also helps people get back into employment, especially if you want to work in retail or warehousing. It helps get me moving and improves my strength, as I have to climb a lot of stairs and lift a lot of boxes!
