Back on Track is inspiring me to help others.

I thought I might like to try writing a blog for Back on Track, but I don’t really know much about it.

I’m 73, have some experience of computers, spreadsheets and databases, but know little about the internet. I have an email account, and have written a few emails, but I want to do more. Communication is very important to me.

I’ve been attending Back on Track for around 18 months. I don’t really have any family or friends around anymore, so Back on Track gives me a sense of family, and a sense of purpose. I love the atmosphere here, the people, and the activities. I’ve been to places in Manchester I would never have known about, let alone visited. I’ve done loads of walking tours, and history, reading and writing courses. I’ve enjoyed them all thoroughly.

I was doing a creative writing course when Covid–19 came along. The course had to stop, but the staff kept in touch with me via phone and email, so I had had regular contact with ‘the family’. The newsletters were great, especially hearing about what everyone else was doing. I’d really like to help write the next one if I can, and maybe do some volunteering on courses in the future.

I live in a hospital for people with mental health needs due to my problems with autism. There was stuff going on in the hospital during lockdown, but not the kind of courses I can do at Back on Track. I’m really glad I’m able to attend again, it helps me to get out of the hospital, into a different environment, see different people and places.

I want to get out in the community and experience as much as I can, and if possible help and hopefully inspire others. If my blog can do that, of course I want to write one.

Roy.
