Swan Buildings was originally built as a carpet and linoleum warehouse during the Victorian industrial era, and still retains a wealth of original features including stained glass, mosaic tiles and the distinctive swan motif.
Back on Track moved into the top floor of Swan Buildings in 1994, and over the years many questions have been asked about its history. We felt that our 20th anniversary of moving into the building was a great time to find some answers to those questions!
The Back on Track local history project is looking at the early history of the building in the context of Ancoats industry, as well as its more recent history as a voluntary sector hub.
Back on Track service users are helping to uncover stories from the past as well as the stories of the more recent users of the building. They are also getting involved in creative ways of sharing the heritage via digital content, a permanent display, and tours during heritage festivals. The project is equipping participants with new skills and inspire them to get involved in other local heritage opportunities.
